Sandford, Laursen & Buchheit 2021, anaerobic speed/power reserve and sport performance

Sports Medicine review of the anaerobic speed reserve (ASR): the gap between an athlete’s maximal aerobic speed (MAS) and maximal sprinting speed (MSS). For efforts above MAS, the fraction of the ASR being used predicts tolerable duration better than the commonly used %MAS, so expressing supramaximal interval intensity as a fraction of ASR individualises the physiological demand across athletes with different sprint speeds. A conceptual and applied synthesis of the ASR literature; running-specific prescription evidence is still developing. Moderate (review).
