Veniamakis et al. 2022, sodium intake in endurance sport
Systematic review (IJERPH, DOI: 10.3390/ijerph19063651, PMID: 35329337) examining the effects of sodium intake on health and performance in endurance and ultra-endurance sport. The authors conclude there is no documented scientific evidence for a sodium–cramp relationship, that exercise-associated hyponatraemia is governed by fluid volume rather than sodium loss, and that 300–600 mg/hour of sodium is appropriate only for prolonged efforts. Moderate evidence.
