Smith et al. 2011, omega-3 and the muscle protein anabolic response
Clinical Science 121(6):267-278 (DOI 10.1042/CS20100597). Acute metabolic RCT in healthy young and middle-aged adults. Eight weeks of fish oil (4 g/day, ~1.86 g EPA + 1.50 g DHA) did not change basal muscle protein synthesis but augmented the synthesis response to combined amino acid and insulin infusion, with greater mTOR and p70S6K phosphorylation. The foundational study behind the “omega-3 as muscle anabolic aid” idea; tightly controlled but small and using a clamp rather than ordinary feeding. Limited as direct evidence for runners.
