Martínez-Vizcaíno et al. 2023, Exercise during pregnancy for preventing gestational diabetes and hypertensive disorders umbrella review
An umbrella review of 23 systematic reviews and an updated meta-analysis of 63 RCTs (~21,000 participants across exercise and control groups) found that exercise during pregnancy reduced gestational diabetes mellitus incidence by 39% (OR 0.61, 95% CI 0.51–0.74) and gestational hypertension by 47% (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.40–0.71); benefits were greatest when interventions began in the first trimester and were supervised. No significant reduction in pre-eclampsia was found (OR 0.81, 95% CI 0.61–1.07). Strong evidence.
