Luedke et al. 2016, Step rate and shin injury in high-school runners

Prospective study of 68 high-school cross-country runners in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Runners in the lowest step-rate group (≤164 spm at a fixed speed) had about 6.7 times the odds of shin injury (OR 6.67, 95% CI 1.2–36.7) versus the highest group (≥174 spm), with a similar effect at self-selected speed. Anterior knee pain was not significantly associated with step rate. A homogeneous group, so speed and training vary less than in general-population cohorts, but small and observational.
