Heliyon 2022, Foot orthoses for patellofemoral pain syndrome

“The effect of foot orthoses for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis.” Heliyon 2022;8(6):e09656. DOI 10.1016/j.heliyon.2022.e09656.

Meta-analysis of six randomised controlled trials. Foot orthoses improved knee function and sport and recreation function but had no significant effect on pain intensity, knee symptoms or knee-related quality of life. Physiotherapy and gait retraining outperformed orthoses, but orthoses added to exercise beat exercise alone. Supports a modest, adjunctive role for orthoses in patellofemoral pain rather than a stand-alone fix.
