George et al. 2024, criteria for returning to running after tibial bone stress injury
A 50-study scoping review in Sports Medicine (DOI: 10.1007/s40279-024-02051-y) examined criteria and guidelines for returning to running after tibial bone stress injury. Five pre-run criteria emerged: resolution of bony tenderness, pain-free walking, evidence of radiological healing for high-risk sites, strength and functional loading tests, and identification of contributing factors. The authors recommend a graduated progression emphasising distance before speed, with ongoing monitoring for symptom provocation and collaborative decision-making between clinicians, coaches, and athletes. Limited evidence.
