Cohen et al. 2021, prohibited stimulants in sports and weight-loss supplements

Laboratory analysis in Clinical Toxicology of sports and weight-loss supplements for undeclared prohibited stimulants, by a leading supplement-analysis group. Across 17 brands, undeclared prohibited stimulants were common: four brands (24%) contained two stimulants, two (12%) contained three, and two (12%) contained four. In total the authors detected nine different prohibited stimulants, several of them never approved for human use, such as deterenol, and some linked to serious adverse events including cardiac arrest. The study shows that undeclared banned stimulants, not just steroids, remain a live contamination problem well after the bans on DMAA and its early successors, complementing the older steroid-focused prevalence work.
