Chyi et al. 2024, stressor history & sport injury
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 studies (databases searched January 2000 to September 2023) on the relationship between athletes’ history of stressors and sport injury. The pooled effect was small but statistically significant (r = .12), with negative life-event stress emerging as the most consistent psychosocial predictor of injury, alongside daily hassles and prior injury history. The finding is consistent with the stress-and-injury model proposed by Williams & Andersen and updates the earlier Ivarsson et al. meta-analyses with a broader search window. Limited to moderate evidence given the small effect size and heterogeneous study designs.
