Bowler et al. 2023, continuous glucose monitors in sport (review)

Narrative review in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, by a sports-nutrition group including Louise Burke, on the use of continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) in sport. CGMs track glucose in the interstitial fluid in real time, and athlete-specific devices now market this capability to non-diabetic athletes. The review frames the applications as possible rather than established, emphasising considerations and cautions over any demonstrated performance benefit. It flags interpretation problems, among them the lag between interstitial and blood glucose and the risk that athletes develop an anxious relationship with glucose data, and calls for proper contextual interpretation. It does not endorse CGM-guided fuelling as a validated performance tool, and it makes the measured case that the evidence is not yet there.
