The marketing playbook
Read the shelf with suspicion
Most of what is sold to fix your running solves a problem you did not have. The pattern is consistent: invent a deficiency or a weakness, promise a product that fixes it, and dress the promise in the language of science. Knowing the playbook is the best defence against it. This is an editorial page about the practice, not a claim-bearing one, so it carries no evidence grade; the specific products it points to are graded on their own pages.
Running is mostly simple and slow. The gains that matter come from running a lot, mostly easy, sleeping well, eating enough and being patient for years, and consistency cannot be bought. That is a hard thing to sell, so an industry has grown up selling the opposite: a purchasable shortcut, an edge in a bottle, a gadget that fixes what ails you. The product on offer is rarely the substance or the device. It is certainty and a feeling of control.
The playbook
Whatever is being sold, supplement, recovery gadget or wearable, the sequence is much the same.
- Manufacture the problem. “Most people are deficient.” “Your recovery is suboptimal.” “You are leaving performance on the table.” The first move is to name a deficit you had not noticed. Magnesium is sold against a deficiency most runners do not have; recovery boots and guns against a slowness of recovery you cannot feel.
- Promise the fix. One product resolves it, cleanly and now. The messier truth, that the fix is months of unglamorous training, is left out.
- Borrow the language of science. Mechanisms, pathways, a molecule with a Greek letter. A plausible mechanism is presented as a proven effect, which is precisely the gap evaluating supplements exists to close.
- Wave a biomarker. Show a number moving, a blood marker, an HRV trend, a recovery score, and imply the number is the goal. A biomarker that shifts is not a race that gets faster.
- Point to an elite. A professional uses it, so it must work. Elite adoption runs ahead of the evidence and is a weak signal at best, the careful reading the wiki gives even to bicarbonate and nitrate.
- Sell urgency and a subscription. A stack, a protocol, a monthly box, restocked before you can ask whether it did anything.
Why it works on runners
Runners are unusually easy marks for this. The sport rewards diligence, so the same conscientious person who trains consistently also reads the labels and wants to do everything right. The marginal-gains idea, true at the elite margin where the basics are already maximised, is sold to recreational runners who have not yet done the basics, where the same 1% is rounding error next to the gains still on the table. And individual variation hands every product an escape hatch: if it did nothing for you, you were simply not a responder, or did not take it for long enough, or at a high enough dose.
The tells
A claim is probably selling you something when:
- it names a problem you had not noticed until the advert;
- its evidence is a mechanism, a biomarker or a testimonial rather than a performance outcome;
- the studies behind it are small, short, funded by the seller, or run on a different population (as with the funding behind nitrate research);
- it promises an effect larger than training itself reliably delivers;
- it comes as a subscription.
The wiki already documents the usual suspects on their own pages: BCAAs, ketone esters, Nomio and the wider weak-supplement shelf; among gear and gadgets, compression apparel, massage guns, compression boots and the vanity metrics a watch invites you to chase.
This is not nihilism
A few things genuinely work, and the wiki says so plainly: caffeine, super-shoes, correcting a real iron deficiency. The point is not that everything is a scam. It is that the burden of proof sits with the seller, the honest aids are few and well known, and almost everything worth doing is cheap or free. When a product promises to fix a problem you cannot feel, the safe assumption is that the problem was manufactured to sell the fix. Spend the money on shoes that fit, and the time on sleep and consistency.
